2009 Rip Van Winkles:

July 20, 2009

The King's Fantasy Football Rip Van Winkles of 2009 represent deep sleepers that may not awake, but if they do provide excellent value in later rounds of the draft.

--Running Backs--

  1. Earnest Graham (Tampa Bay)  With much of the focus on Ward, Graham may be forgotten about in your league.  He is durable and Ward has not proven to shoulder the entire load of an NFL season as a primary running back.  In deeper leagues, Graham provides some value, especially if you are a Ward owner this year.  Remember 2007?
  2. Jerious Norwood (Atlanta)  I am one who feels Norwood has the talent and breakout ability to ge fantasy significant.  Turner is clearly the man in Atlanta however, if he goes down to injury, Norwood should step in and be extremely productive.  He is also in a contract year this year.
  3. Jamaal Charles (Kansas City)  Hard to tell what Larry Johnson is going to do this year.  Charles proved serviceable last year and with some time under his belt, may prove even more serviceable this year.
  4. Kevin Jones (Chicago)  Seems to me that he may still have some gas left in his tank.  Forte goes down and Jones can step in and benefit.
  5. Rashard Mendenhall (Pittsburgh) Although he has"fumbleitis" he could prove to be the next one in line to carry the torch in the Steel City.  Parker is in a contract year and may be elsewhere next year.  I would think they would want to get him more involved to see what they got.  Worth a shot.

    --Wide Receivers--
  1. Chaz Schillens (Oakland)  Someone has to catch the ball in Oakland and if Russell does not get it done soon, then Garcia will not sit on the bench long.  Worth a late round shot anyways.
  2. Derrick Williams (Detroit)  I have a hard time believing that Curry or Bryant Johnson will solidify a starting role.  Williams should get some chances early on to make some plays.  Guys with talent will be on the field this year for the Lions.  Enter Williams.
  3. James Hardy (Buffalo) Three receiver sets with Terrell Owens and Lee Evans stretching the field.  Hardy is tall and will provide a nice target for Edwards in 2009.  He was listed as many a sleeper last year and those who owned him will probably avoid him this year.  Note:  Check his injury status before draft day, recovering from ACL.
  4. Demetrius Williams (Baltimore)  Who is going to step up with the departure of Derrick Mason?  Look for Williams to gain significance this year.
  5. Davone Bess (Miami) He was involved last year and had a few huge plays.  Could be a factor in 2009.
