"Fantasy Football isn't just a game; it is pride, smack talking and being able to stick out your chest at your co-worker or boss, a best friend, a brother, an uncle or any other relative, foe, neighbor or know-it-all." -- Tod "FFLKING" Brooks

2009 Busts:

July 8, 2009

The King's Fantasy Football Busts of 2009 represent players that you should not draft because there will be better value for where they are taken or because they shouldn't be drafted.

BNB's -- Pay special attention to the "Big Name Busts" below!

--Quarterbacks--

  1. Shaun Hill (San Francisco) posted a few good games last year but not enough to warrant a fantasy start.  Avoid San Francisco players this year except for Frank Gore and Vernon Davis (but only in a back up role).
  2. Jake DelHomme (Carolina).  A lackluster 2008 season topped off by a horrific playoff performance.  Did you see that game against the Cards?  I don't think there are many folks that could put that behind them!  Enough said.
  3. Jason Campbell (Washington) is not a fantasy football starter.  Period.
  4. Marc Bulger (St. Louis).  Same as DelHomme, without the pathetic playoff performance.  Perhaps because they didn't make the playoffs.  Now with Bruce and Holt gone and only Donnie Avery to throw it to, Bulger should not be on your roster.
  5. Sage Rosenfels (Green Bay).  Even if Brett Favre doesn't come back (which is crazy talk), Rosenfels makes too many mental errors to remain in the line up.  I think Tavaris Jackson would win out in the long run if it were a battle between the two.

--Running Backs--

  1. Thomas Jones (New York Jets).  2008 was a miracle helped out by Brett Favre.  This year it is time to come back to reality.  The reality is that Shonne Greene and Leon Washington will be involved and prove more worthy in 2009.
  2. Josef Addai (Indianapolis).  Best years are behind him (5 touchdowns all of last year) and Donald Brown is going to render him un-startable.
  3. Willis McGahee (Baltimore).  With LeRon McClain and Ray Rice, McGahee will not see the 20+ carries he would need to be fantasy significant.
  4. Julius Jones (Seattle).  Last year was enough evidence for me.  With a chance to take over the starting job, he amassed 2 touchdowns in the first 3 weeks and none thereafter.  Why, I ask why would you take him?
  5. Cedric Benson (Cincinnati).  Look for Brian Leonard and rookie Bernard Scott to compete for fantasy impact this year.  Benson just doesn't provide enough explosiveness to be significant this year.
  6. Jamal Lewis (Cleveland).  He plays for the Browns.  They will be behind and passing the ball, and not passing it too well either.  If you have to take a Brown, then take Jerome Harrison, or better yet take Donald Brown (Indianapolis).

 --Wide Receivers--

  1. Terrell Owens (Buffalo) BNB. In 2008, he had 8 games with 5 catches or less that he failed to amass more than 40 yards.  For the entire season he only cracked 100 yards twice.  This was with a better offense than he has now.  Expect more of the same this year.  T.O. will disappoint many a fantasy football owner this year.  It won't be me!
  2. Antonio Bryant (Tampa Bay) BNB.  Talent as exposed last year.  No one to throw him the ball this year.  Talent wasted and he will be drafted way too early in hopes of a repeat performance that will not happen.
  3. Hines Ward (Pittsburgh) BNB.  Santonio Holmes will remain significant and Ward will be a decoy in 2009.  Age catches up with everyone eventually, "Go Young" and let someone else take Ward this year.
  4. Chad Ochocinco (Cincinnati) BNB.  Laveranues Coles will remain significant and Chris Henry will be a sleeper this year.  Ochocinco will battle T.O. for the "most smack talking with a few tears sprinkled in without backing it up" award in 2009.  The type in the box score will not match the hype this year.
  5. Torry Holt (Jacksonville) BNB.  He couldn't get open via separation last year in St. Louis; age has caught up with this former fantasy football workhorse.  Expect more of the same in 2009.
  6. Patrick Crayton (Dallas).  Not the answer in Dallas.
  7. Kevin Curtis (Philadelphia).  Not enough balls to go around.  Limited playing time due to excellent skills of DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant.
